Today ICAN accepts the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize at the awards ceremony in Oslo.
Motion signatories Members of the Scotitsh Parliament and I wish ICAN all the best and congratulate them on being awarded this prestigious prize. Please see my motion of support for ICAN below along with an illustated video of Setsuko Thurlow's speech at the United Nations this July.
That the Parliament congratulates ICAN on winning the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize for its work to draw attention to the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of any use of nuclear weapons and for its ground-breaking efforts to achieve a treaty-based prohibition of such weapons; notes that Setsuko Thurlow, a survivor of the United States' atomic bombing of Hiroshima, will jointly accept this prize along with the ICAN Executive Director, Beatrice Fihn, on 10 December 2017 in Oslo; highlights Thurlow’s pivotal role in the UN negotiations earlier this year, which led to the nuclear ban treaty adoption in July 2017, which has the intention of outlawing nuclear weapons; affirms the representation of Scotland at the Nobel Peace Prize award ceremony through the Scottish ceremonial torch being brought to the torch-lit procession, and acknowledges the torch handover from the First Minister to the Scottish ICAN Liaison, Janet Fenton, symbolising Scotland’s commitment to a nuclear weapons-free world.
